Where do I start?

Below are ideas on how to use the Learning Toolkit to engage students and community members through games and activities, group projects, and further reading.

1 – Encourage creativity

There are countless ways to explore Women of Impact in Canada, and while the Learning toolkit provides a number of suggestions, encouraging learners to bring their own ideas will result in meaningful learning experiences.

2 – Explore the interactive map

An interactive map that connects each of the women to a geographical area of Canada associated with her personal or professional history can be accessed from the main page. Take time to explore the stories of women from your province or territory, as well as those from other regions across Canada.

3 – Discover the timelines

Timelines have been created for each of the five categories: STEM, Arts, Politics, Human Rights and Trailblazers. Because the timelines use photos to capture historical milestones, they are a great way to generate group discussions. Providing additional background information can help situate each milestone within a broader historical context.

4 – Build your own

The best way to make learning come alive is by discovering the women who have made a difference in your community. Considering building your own gallery as a group project to celebrate the achievements of local women and share their stories. The Learning toolkit contains guidelines and templates for building a local Women of Impact gallery.

5 – Read up!

Consult the reading list in the Learning toolkit for suggestions of works of fiction and non-fiction written by or about women featured in Women of Impact in Canada. These books can amplify and expand on learning or inspire guided reading groups or community book clubs.

6 – Collaborate

Activities that bring learners together can promote collaboration and teamwork skills, encourage creativity, and improve learning outcomes. The Learning toolkit includes ideas to involve and engage learners in discussions and group projects.

7 – Make it fun!

The games and activities section in the Learning toolkit is designed to engage students and learners of all ages through a Women of Impact in Canada-themed word search, colouring pages, and crossword puzzle. These activities can be a fun way to introduce the gallery to students.
