Response by gender identity

Compared to respondents from other gender identity groups, transgender men and non-binary/agender respondents were more likely to report that they don’t pay for housing and less likely to have a mortgage on their own home. Cisgender respondents were less likely than non-cisgender respondents to rent at a subsidized price.

Response by population group and Indigenous identity

Latin American respondents were more likely to say that they rent at full market price (53%), whereas East Asians were least likely (30%). Over 10% of Black Caribbean and Black African respondents declared renting at a subsidized price.

South East Asian (29%), East Asian (27%) and Black African (24%) respondents were more likely to report that they did not pay for housing than respondents from other groups.

Navigating the Shelter System

For those respondents that did access the shelter system, 51% reported that it was difficult for them to navigate because of their sexual orientation, while 57% reported that it was difficult to navigate due to their gender identity.

Response by disability status

Respondents with a disability (11%) were more likely than respondents without a disability (4%) to report that discrimination due to their actual or perceived sexual orientation had impacted their housing stability or their ability to access stable housing in the five years preceding the survey.

Among respondents experiencing such discrimination, respondents with a disability said that they were harassed by neighbours (36%) and/or by those they live with (36%) more frequently than respondents without a disability (25% and 25% respectively). They were also more likely to feel unsafe in their neighbourhoods (48% for respondents with a disability compared to 39% for respondents without a disability).

Among respondents experiencing such discrimination, respondents with a disability said that they were harassed by neighbours (34%) and/or by those they live with (42%) more frequently than respondents without a disability (25% and 34% respectively). They were also more likely to feel unsafe in their neighbourhoods (53% for respondents with a disability compared to 43% for respondents without a disability).
